As they age, these wines improve in finesse and excellence.

Dry white wines in the Pessac-Léognan appellation together with the Barsac and Sauternes white liquoreux are the only whites to be classified in the whole of the Bordeaux wine-growing country.

On leaving Bordeaux, to discover the itinerary for the red and white Crus Classés within the prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation, drive in the direction of Talence and Pessac, then south to Léognan and Martillac.

Stop in Gradignan to visit the Vine and Wine Ecomuseum that exhibits a collection of 500 tools dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Drive as far as La Brède and visit the castle where Montesquieu was born in 1689.

Proceed along the N113 to follow the Graves appellation, the birthplace of Bordeaux wines, with its fine aromatic reds and its elegant and plump dry whites.

Discover the Graves Supérieures and its sweet white wines with a striking bouquet.

In Podensac, the Maison du Vin de Graves will welcome you and give you information on the vineyard and the area.

Continue towards Cérons, Barsac and Sauternes, the famous appellations for white liquoreux. For the more inquisitive : in Langon, visit the Wine Labels Museum in the cellars of Mauriac’s Château (make an appointment to visit; tel. 05 56 63 39 81).

• In Mazères, the Roquetaillade Fortress, dating from the 12th and 14th centuries, with remains dating from the Middle Ages but transformed into a palace by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century.

• In Barsac, the listed St Vincent’s church, a typical example of the 18th century.

• In Podensac : the Water Tower and Belvedere built by Le Corbusier, is a striking architectural curiosity.
