
The village that gave its name to this appellation, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, was founded in 1255 by Alphonse of Poitiers, the brother of St. Louis of France. The place was fortified as a protection against English invaders


The red wines are robust, structured and very rich in tannin. They have a complex nose of undergrowth and leather.
These wines keep very well but they can also be drunk when young and fruity.
In its eastern part, next to the Dordogne département, the area boasts an original terroir : deep valleys, the result of erosion, with sandy soils and scattered siliceous soils called “boulbènes”.

This area is known principally for its sweet white wines, called “moelleux”, with flowery and spicy aroma. The production includes a few dry whites.
