Because of the large area, there is a great variety of terroirs.
However, they can be sorted out into 4 main groups : clay and limestone along the Dordogne next to a steep cliff; “boulbènes” very suitable to white grape varieties in the centre and southern part of the plateau, with limestone and fine gravel on the southern slopes; in the north, clay and limestone with stretches of gravel and sandy zones; in the east, a majority of silty soils.

The main features of these A.O.C. wines are : a shiny pale golden hue, a bouquet with notes of ripe grape and citrus, a light , fresh, lively and fruity palate. Some wines also develop a flowery aroma (broom, hawthorn, iris, box, red currants) or exotic fruit aroma.
You should drink these wines young, within the year following harvesting, to appreciate their fruitiness.
Note that Entre-Deux-Mers A.O.C. indicates only inoffensive dry white wines, but this area also produces rosé wine, light red wine, sparkling and red wines sold under the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur appellations. The Entre-Deux-Mers-Haut-Benauge A.O.C. is confined to a few villages which produce dry white wines identical to those of Entre-Deux-Mers A.O.C.
