A fine example of military architecture, the citadel of Blaye was built by Vauban, from 1685 to 1689, on the orders of Louis XIV, to protect Bordeaux from the English fleet

The Blayais estates are situated in a transition area between the land of Oc and the land of Oïl, north of the Gironde, and on the borders of the Charentes ; they sit mostly on the edge of the plateau that overlooks the Gironde.
In the northern part, surrounding Saint-Ciers, the subsoil comprises of red silica and white sands mixed with good quality gravel, quite different from the rest of the appellation where the subsoil is of clay and limestone with chalk outcrops.
The Blayais reds are elegant, light, and subtle, with a fine colour and fruit flavour.
The reds from the south keep well; those from the north should be enjoyed younger.
The whites are fine, vigorous and fruity with aromas of broom and citrus.
